In short: Data Storage Converter
1 converts to 953.67, which is 1,00,00,00,000 bytes, because 1 GB = 953.6743 MiB. The two families of unit are why a drive sold as one size shows as rather less on a computer: the maker counts in thousands and the operating system often counts in units of one thousand and twenty-four.
What is Data Storage?
A kilobyte means a thousand bytes, while a kibibyte means one thousand and twenty-four, and the gap between the two conventions widens with every step up.
How is Data Storage calculated?
Every unit is stored as a number of bytes, so a conversion multiplies by the first unit's byte count and divides by the second's. The decimal units step by a thousand each time and the binary ones by one thousand and twenty-four.
- b_fromthe number of bytes in one of the unit you have
- b_tothe number of bytes in one of the unit you want
A worked example
| Size | 1 |
|---|---|
| From | Gigabyte (GB, 1000) |
| To | Mebibyte (MiB, 1024) |
| Result | |
| Converted size | 953.67 |
| In bytes | 1,00,00,00,000 |
| How it converts | 1 GB = 953.6743 MiB |
Every figure in this table is produced by the same calculation the tool above runs.
How to use this data storage converter
- Enter the size.
- Pick the unit it is in, watching whether it is the decimal or the binary one.
- Pick the unit you want.
- Read the answer, and the figure in plain bytes underneath.
Questions people ask
Why does my new drive show less space than advertised?
Because the maker counts a gigabyte as a thousand million bytes while the operating system often reports in units of one thousand and twenty-four. The bytes have not gone anywhere; they are being counted differently. Converting between the two families here shows exactly where the difference comes from.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
A megabyte is a million bytes and a mebibyte is one thousand and twenty-four squared, which is about five per cent more. The binary names were introduced to end the ambiguity, though everyday usage still mixes them. Both are in the list above.
Are network speeds measured the same way?
No, and it trips people up: a connection sold in megabits per second delivers roughly an eighth of that in megabytes per second, because there are eight bits in a byte. The bit unit is in the list so you can do that conversion here.
Which convention should I use?
Use whichever the thing you are measuring uses. Storage makers and network providers use the decimal units, while operating systems and memory sizes usually use the binary ones. The point of this tool is to move between them without arithmetic errors.
