In short: Income Tax Calculator

On a yearly income of ₹12,00,000, the new regime charges ₹0.00 and the old regime ₹1,11,800.00 once the deductions entered above are claimed. New regime is the cheaper of the two here, saving ₹1,11,800.00, and the tax works out at 0.00% of your income.

What is Income Tax?

Income tax is charged on your total income in slabs, with the rate rising as income crosses each threshold, under whichever of the two regimes you choose.

How is Income Tax calculated?

tax=∑slabs(income in slab×slab rate)

Income is split across the slabs and each part is charged at that slab's rate. The rebate is then taken off if income is within its limit, surcharge is added on higher incomes, and cess is charged on the result. Marginal relief stops a rupee of extra income from costing more than a rupee of tax at the thresholds.

  • income in slabthe part of taxable income that falls in that slab
  • slab ratethe percentage charged on that part
  • cessthe health and education cess charged on the tax plus surcharge

Questions people ask

How is income tax calculated in India?

Taxable income is split across slabs and each slice is taxed at that slab's rate, so a higher slab applies only to the income above its threshold. The rebate under Section 87A can remove the tax entirely below a limit, after which surcharge and cess are added. This page applies all of those in order and shows both regimes.

Which regime should I choose?

The new regime has lower rates but allows almost no deductions, so it usually wins unless you claim a lot. If you have a home loan, substantial Section 80C investments and rent, the old regime can still be cheaper. Enter your real deductions above and compare the two figures.

What is marginal relief and does it apply to me?

It stops a small amount of income above a threshold from triggering a large jump in tax, by capping the increase at the extra income itself. It matters most just above the rebate limit and just above each surcharge threshold. This tool applies it at both.

Does this cover capital gains?

No. Gains taxed at special rates sit outside the slab system and are not included here. Use the capital gains tool for those, and add the result to the figure from this page.

Is the standard deduction included?

Yes, it is applied in both regimes on the assumption that the income is salary. If your income is not salary, the standard deduction does not apply and the figure here will be slightly low. Everything else is driven by what you enter.
