In short: TDS Calculator
On ₹1,00,000 under 194A: Interest from a bank or post office, the deduction is ₹10,000.00 at 10.00%, leaving ₹90,000.00 to be paid. The threshold for this section is ₹50,000.00, and nothing is deducted until a payment crosses it. Without a PAN the rate rises under Section 206AA.
What is TDS?
Tax deducted at source is tax the payer withholds from certain payments and deposits with the government on the recipient's behalf.
How is TDS calculated?
Once the payment for the year crosses the section's threshold, multiply the amount by that section's rate and divide by a hundred. Where the recipient has not given a PAN, the rate used is the higher of the section rate and the rate set by Section 206AA.

Questions people ask
What happens if there is no PAN?
Section 206AA requires deduction at a higher rate, which this tool applies when you say no PAN was given. The recipient then cannot easily claim the credit either. Collecting the PAN before paying is far simpler than correcting it afterwards.
Is TDS deducted on the whole amount or only the excess?
On the whole amount, once the threshold for the year has been crossed, not merely on the part above it. That is why a payment just over a threshold can attract a noticeably larger deduction than one just under. The thresholds are listed in the sources below.
Does TDS mean my tax is settled?
No, it is only tax collected in advance against your final liability. You still file a return, and the deduction appears as a credit in your Form 26AS. If too much was deducted you claim a refund.
Who is responsible for depositing it?
The payer, who must deposit the amount by the due date and file the quarterly statement. Late deposit attracts interest and a late filing fee. The recipient's credit depends on the payer filing correctly.
