In short: FD Calculator
₹5,00,000 placed for 5 years at 7% a year, compounded Quarterly, matures at ₹7,07,389.10 and earns ₹2,07,389.10 in interest. The effective yearly rate works out at 7.19%, a little above the quoted rate, because the interest is added every quarter rather than once a year.
What is FD?
A fixed deposit is money placed with a bank for an agreed term at an agreed rate, with the interest added at set intervals until it matures.
How is FD calculated?
Divide the yearly rate by the number of rests in a year and add one, then raise that to the number of rests over the whole term and multiply by the deposit. Indian banks usually rest a term deposit every quarter.

Questions people ask
Is the interest on an FD taxable?
Yes, it is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate in the year it accrues, not only when the deposit matures. Banks deduct tax at source once the interest crosses the threshold for the year. The TDS tool shows what would be deducted.
What happens if I break the deposit early?
The bank pays interest at the rate applicable for the period the money actually stayed, usually with a penalty of around half a per cent deducted. That can be noticeably less than the rate you were promised. Ask for the premature withdrawal terms before you deposit.
Does a cumulative FD pay more than a payout one?
Yes, because in a cumulative deposit the interest stays in and compounds, while a payout deposit hands it to you each quarter. The quoted rate is usually the same; the difference is what happens to the interest. This tool shows the cumulative figure.
Are senior citizen rates different?
Most banks pay senior citizens a little extra, commonly half a per cent above the ordinary rate. Enter whichever rate applies to you rather than the headline one. The exemption threshold for tax deduction is also higher for seniors.
