In short: Tile Calculator

A floor of 120.00 square feet needs 35 tiles of the size entered, once the allowance for cuts is added, which is 9 boxes. At the price entered the tiles come to about ₹10,800.00. One tile of this size covers 3.88 square feet.

What is Tile?

Tile quantity is the floor area divided by the area of one tile, with a percentage added for the tiles cut at the edges and broken on site.

How is Tile calculated?

N=⌈AfloorAtile×(1+w)⌉

Divide the floor area by the area of one tile, add the wastage percentage, and round up, because half a tile cannot be bought. The number of boxes is that figure divided by the tiles in a box, rounded up again.

How to use this tile calculator

  1. Enter the floor's length and width.
  2. Enter the tile size in millimetres, as the box states it.
  3. Set the wastage allowance, higher for an odd-shaped room.
  4. Enter the tiles in a box and the price of a box.

Questions people ask

How much wastage should I allow?

A tenth is the usual allowance for a square room with straight edges. Allow more, around fifteen per cent, for an odd shape, for tiles laid diagonally, or for a large-format tile where a single break costs more area. Tilers generally prefer to have spares left over.

Why buy whole boxes?

Because tiles are sold by the box and a later box may come from a different batch, with a slightly different shade. Buying the full quantity at once avoids that. Keeping a few spares for future repairs is worth the shelf space.

Does this work for wall tiles?

Yes, enter the wall's height and width instead of the floor's dimensions. Remember to take out the area of a door or a window if you are tiling around one. Running the tool once per wall is the simplest way.

Why is the tile area shown in square feet?

Because tiles are sold by size in millimetres but rooms are measured in feet in most of India, and mixing the two is where the arithmetic usually goes wrong. The tool converts and shows the result, so you can check it against the box. The unit converter handles other combinations.
