In short: Ratio Calculator

The ratio above simplifies to 3 : 4, which is 42.86% against 57.14%. Sharing the total out in that proportion gives 6,000.00 to the first part and 8,000.00 to the second. Sharing works by counting the parts and giving each side its number of them.

What is Ratio?

A ratio compares two quantities by how many parts each one has, without saying how large a part is.

How is Ratio calculated?

share=total×partparts

Add the two sides to get the number of parts, then give each side the total times its own parts divided by that number. Simplifying divides both sides by their highest common factor.

  • sharewhat one side receives
  • partthat side's number of parts
  • partsthe two sides added together

Every figure in this table is produced by the same calculation the tool above runs.

How to use this ratio calculator

  1. Enter the two sides of the ratio.
  2. Enter the total to be shared, if you have one.
  3. Read the simplified ratio and each side as a percentage.
  4. Read what each side receives from the total.

Questions people ask

How do I share an amount in a ratio?

Add the sides to find how many parts there are in all, work out what one part is worth, then give each side its number of parts. The tool does this and shows both shares. Checking that the two shares add back to the total is a good habit.

What is the difference between a ratio and a fraction?

A ratio compares two parts with each other, while a fraction compares one part with the whole. Two parts to three is the same as two fifths of the total, not two thirds. Mixing the two up is the most common mistake with ratios.

Can a ratio have decimals?

Yes, and the tool handles it, though it can only simplify whole numbers. A ratio with decimals is usually clearer multiplied up until both sides are whole. The percentages shown beside it work either way.

Where does this come up in practice?

Splitting rent by room size, mixing cement and sand, dividing profit between partners, and scaling a recipe. Anywhere two quantities must stay in proportion while the total changes. The rent split tool applies the same arithmetic to a household.
