In short: Percentage to CGPA Calculator

A percentage of 78% converts to a CGPA of 8.21 under the rule chosen, which is CGPA = (percentage - 0) / 9.5 (CBSE), and sits in the First division with distinction band. Because each institution sets its own rule, a percentage can map to different CGPAs depending on whose formula you use.

What is Percentage to CGPA?

Converting a percentage to a CGPA reverses the formula the institution publishes for going the other way.

How is Percentage to CGPA calculated?

CGPA=percentage-cs

Take the percentage, remove whatever the institution's rule adds, and divide by its multiplier. Under the CBSE rule that means dividing by nine and a half. It is the forward rule read backwards.

  • CGPAthe cumulative grade point average
  • cthe amount the rule adds, where it does
  • sthe multiplier that institution uses

Questions people ask

Is reversing the formula legitimate?

It gives the CGPA that would have produced that percentage under the same published rule, which is the right answer when a form wants a CGPA and you have a percentage. It is not a substitute for the figure on your marksheet. Where the marksheet shows a CGPA, use that.

Why does the answer differ between institutions?

Because the forward rules differ, so their reverses do too: a percentage of seventy-eight is a different CGPA under a multiply-by-nine-and-a-half rule than under one that subtracts first. Choosing the right institution matters as much here as in the other direction.

Can a CGPA come out above the maximum?

The arithmetic can produce one for a very high percentage under some rules, and the tool caps it at the top of the scale. If that happens, the rule chosen probably does not match the marks you are converting. Check which rule your institution actually publishes.

Which figure should I write on an application?

Whatever your marksheet shows, in the form it shows it. Where the form demands the other form, convert with your own institution's rule and say which was used. A conversion certificate from the institution settles any doubt.
