    In short: Image Compressor

Image Compressor shrinks pictures in this page, which is exactly what the forms demanding a photograph under a fixed size are for. Daytoolz re-draws the picture inside the width and height you choose and re-encodes it at the quality you choose, on your own device, and shows the size before and after.

    What is Image Compressor?

Compressing an image means re-encoding it at a lower quality, and often at a smaller width, so the file takes less space.

    How is Image Compressor calculated?

    saved=sizebefore-sizeaftersizebefore×100

The picture is drawn to a canvas inside the width and height asked for, keeping its shape, and written out again at the chosen quality. The saving is the drop in file size as a share of the original. Width usually saves more than quality does, because halving the width quarters the number of pixels.

How to use this image compressor

    1. Choose the pictures, or drag them onto the box.
    2. Set the quality. Around three quarters is hard to tell apart from the original.
    3. Set the largest width or height you need, which is often what really cuts the size. The picture keeps its shape.
    4. Save the result, re-encoded here on your device.

    Questions people ask

    What quality should I use?

Around three quarters is usually indistinguishable from the original on a screen, and roughly halves the size of a photograph. Below about half, edges and skin tones start to look blotchy. Try one, look at the result, and adjust.

Why did my PNG get bigger?

PNG stores pixels exactly and ignores the quality setting, so saving a photograph as PNG can easily make it larger than the JPEG it came from. Choose JPEG for photographs and keep PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with sharp edges or transparency.

Does reducing the width lose anything important?

Only if the picture will be printed or zoomed into. For a form, a website or a message, a width well below what a modern camera produces is plenty. Reducing width is the most effective single change you can make to the file size.

    Are my photographs uploaded?

No. They are decoded, drawn and re-encoded inside this page, and the result is handed back as a download from your own device. You can watch the network panel while it runs: nothing carries image data.
