Using 250 units at ₹7 gives an energy charge of ₹1,750.00, and with the fixed charge and ₹95.00 of duty the bill comes to ₹1,995.00. An appliance of the wattage entered uses 270.00 units a month, which costs ₹1,890.00 to run.
What is Electricity Bill?
An electricity bill is the units used times the rate for a unit, plus the fixed charge, plus any duty charged on the total.
How is Electricity Bill calculated?
Multiply the units used by the rate for a unit, add the fixed charge, and add the duty charged on that total. An appliance's monthly consumption is its wattage divided by a thousand, times the hours a day it runs, times the days in the month.
- Uthe units of electricity used, in kilowatt hours
- rthe rate charged for one unit
- Fthe fixed charge on the bill
A worked example
| Units used in the month (kWh) | 250 |

| Rate a unit | ₹7 |
| Fixed charge in the bill | ₹150 |
| Electricity duty (%) | 5% |
| Appliance wattage (optional) | 1500 |
| Hours a day it runs | 6 |
| Result | |
| Your monthly bill | ₹1,995.00 |
| Energy charge | ₹1,750.00 |
| Duty | ₹95.00 |
| Units that appliance uses a month | 270.00 |
| That appliance costs a month | ₹1,890.00 |
Every figure in this table is produced by the same calculation the tool above runs.

Questions people ask
Why does this ask for my tariff instead of knowing it?
Because tariffs, slabs, fixed charges and duty are set by each state's electricity regulator and change most years, so any figure built into a tool would be wrong somewhere. Your own bill has the right numbers printed on it. Entering them takes a moment and makes the answer actually yours.
What is a unit of electricity?
One kilowatt hour: a thousand watts running for an hour. A one-kilowatt appliance running for an hour uses one unit, and a hundred-watt bulb takes ten hours to use the same. That is why the appliance box asks for watts and hours.
Why is my bill higher than this figure?
Most often because the tariff rises in slabs, so the units above a threshold cost more than the ones below it, while this tool uses a single rate. It also leaves out meter rent, arrears and any subsidy. Use your bill's average rate per unit if the slabs matter.
How much does an air conditioner cost to run?
Enter its wattage, which is on the rating label, and the hours a day you run it. A modern inverter unit draws less than its rated power most of the time, so treat the answer as an upper bound. It is usually the largest single line in a summer bill.
