In short: Bill Split Calculator

A bill of ₹2,400 with ₹120.00 of GST and a tip of ₹240.00 comes to ₹2,760.00, which is ₹690.00 each between 4 people. The split is worked out in whole paise, so the shares add back to the total exactly rather than leaving a stray paisa.

What is Bill Split?

Splitting a bill means dividing the total, after tax and any tip, equally between the people sharing it.

How is Bill Split calculated?

each=B+G+Tn

Add GST and the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. The division is done in paise and any leftover paise are given to the first people in the list, so the shares always add back to the total.

How to use this bill split calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount before tax.
  2. Choose the GST rate shown on the bill.
  3. Set the tip, as a percentage of the bill or a flat amount, if you are leaving one.
  4. Enter how many people are sharing, and read each share.

Questions people ask

Should the tip be worked out before or after GST?

This tool takes the tip as a percentage of the bill before tax, which is the usual convention and is slightly kinder to the payers. Some people tip on the total instead. Either is fine as long as everyone understands which was used.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

No. A service charge is added by the restaurant and is not required to be paid; a tip is yours to decide. If the bill already carries a service charge, leave the tip here at nothing rather than paying twice.

What happens to the last paisa?

An amount that does not divide evenly leaves a paisa or two over, and the tool hands those to the first people rather than rounding everyone up. That keeps the shares adding back to the total exactly. The difference is never more than a paisa a head.

What if people ate very different amounts?

Then an equal split is the wrong tool and the ratio tool is the right one: give each person a number of parts and share the total that way. An equal split is simplest when the meal was roughly shared.
