Questions people ask

Until what age can an account be opened?

An account can be opened any time before the girl turns 10, and only one account is allowed per girl. Opening it early matters, because the maturity date is fixed from the opening and an early start means more years of interest. The scheme rules in the sources below set the conditions.

How long do I have to keep depositing?

Deposits are required for the first fifteen years, after which the account continues to earn interest without further deposits until it matures in the twenty-first year. There is a small minimum each year to keep the account active. Missing it can make the account irregular until a penalty is paid.

Can the money be withdrawn early?

A partial withdrawal is allowed once the girl turns eighteen or passes the tenth standard, within a limit set by the rules, and is intended for education. Closure before maturity is permitted only in specific circumstances such as marriage after eighteen. Check the current rules before planning around either.

How does it compare with PPF?

The rate on this scheme has usually been a little higher than PPF, and both are free of tax at every stage. PPF is flexible about who it is for and when it matures, while this account is tied to one girl and one date. Many families run both.
