What is EPF?

The Employees Provident Fund is a retirement account into which both you and your employer pay a share of your basic pay every month, earning interest declared each year.

How is EPF calculated?

balance=(balance+cemployee+cemployer)×(1+i)

Each month both contributions are added to the balance and the whole balance earns one month's interest. Pay rises once a year, so the contributions rise with it. The employer's pension share is not part of this balance.

How to use this EPF calculator

  1. Enter your monthly basic pay plus dearness allowance, not your gross salary.
  2. Enter your age now and the age you expect to retire.
  3. Set the yearly increment you expect over your career.
  4. Leave the contribution shares as they are unless your employer differs.

Questions people ask

Why is the employer's share smaller than mine?

The employer pays the same total percentage, but a large part of it goes to the pension scheme rather than the provident fund, leaving 3.67% for the fund itself. Only the fund part builds the balance shown here. The pension part is a separate benefit with its own rules.

What interest rate does EPF pay?

The rate is declared each financial year by the EPFO's board, and the figure used here is 8.25% for the year named in the sources below. It is not fixed in advance, so a long projection is only as good as that assumption. Enter a lower rate to see a cautious view.

Is EPF interest taxable?

Interest on your own contributions above a yearly threshold is taxable, and the threshold is higher where the employer does not contribute. Below that, the interest stays exempt. Check the current threshold before assuming the whole balance grows tax free.

What happens if I change jobs?

The balance can be transferred to the new employer's account against the same universal account number, which keeps the interest running. Withdrawing instead resets the compounding and can attract tax if the service was short. Transferring is almost always the better choice.
