In short: PPF Calculator

Depositing ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1% grows to ₹40,68,209.22. Of that, ₹22,50,000.00 is your own deposits and ₹18,18,209.22 is interest. Because nothing is taxed on the way in, on the way through or at maturity, the whole of that interest reaches you.

What is PPF?

The Public Provident Fund is a government savings scheme with a fifteen-year term, in which the deposit, the interest and the maturity amount are all free of tax.

How is PPF calculated?

balance=(balance+D)×(1+r)

Each year the deposit is added to the balance and the whole balance earns one year's interest. That repeats for the term of the account. Interest is paid on the lowest balance between the fifth and the last day of each month, so a deposit made early in April earns for the full year.

  • balancethe running balance in the account
  • Dthe amount deposited that year
  • rthe yearly rate notified for the scheme, as a decimal

How to use this PPF calculator

  1. Enter what you will deposit each year, up to the yearly ceiling.
  2. Leave the rate at the notified figure unless you are modelling a change.
  3. Set the term. A fresh account runs for fifteen years before maturity.
  4. Read the maturity amount, and compare your deposits with the interest.

Questions people ask

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The rate used here is 7.1% a year, taken from the notification shown in the sources below as of 1 October 2025. The government reviews small savings rates every quarter, so check the date before relying on the figure. The tool recalculates if you enter a different rate.

When should I deposit to earn the most interest?

Interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the fifth and the last day of each month, so money deposited after the fourth earns nothing that month. Depositing the yearly amount in the first days of April earns a full year of interest on it. Spreading deposits across the year earns noticeably less.

Can I withdraw before the term ends?

A partial withdrawal is allowed from the seventh year, within limits set by the rules, and a loan against the balance is possible earlier. A full closure before maturity is permitted only on specific grounds. Check the current rules before planning around either.

Is the interest really tax free?

Yes. The deposit qualifies for a deduction, the interest is exempt as it accrues, and the maturity amount is exempt as well. That is unusual among Indian savings products and is much of the reason the scheme is popular.
