Questions people ask
How long does Kisan Vikas Patra take to double?
At the rate of 7.5% notified as of 1 October 2025, the term works out to 115 months. The government fixes the term alongside the rate, so both change together when small savings rates are revised. A certificate keeps the term it was bought under.
Is the interest taxable?
Yes, the interest is taxable as income, and unlike some other small savings schemes the deposit does not qualify for a Section 80C deduction. Interest accrues each year even though it is paid at maturity. Declaring it yearly avoids a large one-off addition to income.
Can I encash it before maturity?
Premature encashment is allowed after a lock-in period set by the rules, with the return depending on how long it was held. Encashing early gives less than the doubling the scheme promises. The current rules in the sources below set out the conditions.
Who is the scheme actually for?
Despite the name it is open to any resident individual, not only farmers. It suits someone who wants a government-backed certificate and does not need the money or a tax deduction in the meantime. Those who want the deduction usually prefer PPF or NSC.
