What is NSC?
A National Savings Certificate is a fixed-term post office investment on which interest compounds yearly and is paid in full at maturity.

Questions people ask
What rate does NSC pay now?
The rate used here is 7.7% a year, from the notification shown in the sources as of 1 October 2025. Small savings rates are reviewed quarterly, and the rate is fixed for the life of a certificate once bought. A certificate bought today keeps today's rate until it matures.
How is NSC interest taxed?
The interest is taxable as income each year, but for the first four years it is treated as reinvested and therefore also qualifies under Section 80C. Only the final year's interest is taxed without an offsetting deduction. Declare the accrued interest each year rather than only at maturity.
Can I take the money out early?
Premature encashment is allowed only in limited circumstances, such as the death of the holder or a court order. Otherwise the certificate runs to its term. Treat the money as locked for the full period when you plan around it.
Is NSC better than a bank fixed deposit?
The rate is often a little higher and is backed by the government, and the Section 80C deduction adds to the appeal. Against that, a bank deposit can be broken early and can be held for shorter terms. Compare the post-tax return for your own slab.
