In short: Hash Generator
The text above hashes with SHA-256, producing a digest of 256 bits, which is 64 characters written in hexadecimal, from 11 bytes of input. The same text always gives the same digest, and changing a single character changes the whole of it.
What is Hash?
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of some data, computed so that the same input always gives the same output and a different input almost never does.
How is Hash calculated?
The text is encoded to bytes and passed through the chosen SHA algorithm, which returns a fixed number of bits however long the input was. The result is written out in hexadecimal, two characters to a byte.
- digestthe hash, written in hexadecimal
- SHAthe algorithm chosen, from the SHA family

How to use this hash generator
- Paste the text you want to hash.
- Choose the algorithm, with SHA-256 as the usual default.
- Choose upper or lower case for the output.
- Copy the digest.
Questions people ask
Can a hash be reversed?
Not directly, because a hash throws information away: many inputs map to the same fixed length. Short or common inputs can still be found by guessing against a list, which is why passwords are hashed with a salt and a slow algorithm instead. Hashing alone is not a way to hide something.
Should I still use SHA-1?
Not for anything that needs to resist tampering, because practical collisions have been demonstrated against it. It remains in use for checksums and for compatibility with older systems. Choose SHA-256 unless something specifically requires SHA-1.
Which algorithm should I pick?
SHA-256 is the sensible default and is what most systems expect. SHA-384 and SHA-512 produce longer digests and are no slower on a modern machine. The right answer is whatever the system you are talking to requires.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The hash is computed by the cryptography built into your browser, in this page, and nothing is stored or sent. This tool will not put your text into a shareable link either.
