In short: NPS Calculator
Contributing ₹5,000 a month from age 30 to 60 at a return of 10% builds a corpus of about ₹1,13,96,626.62. You could take ₹68,37,975.97 of that as a tax-free lumpsum, while ₹45,58,650.65 goes into an annuity paying roughly ₹22,793.25 a month for life.
What is NPS?
The National Pension System is a retirement account in which your contributions are invested until an exit age, after which part of the corpus must buy an annuity that pays a pension.
How is NPS calculated?
The corpus is built the same way a monthly investment is, with each contribution compounding until the exit age. At exit, the share set aside for an annuity is multiplied by the annuity rate and divided across twelve months to give the monthly pension.
- Cthe corpus at the exit age
- athe share of the corpus used to buy an annuity
- r_annuitythe yearly rate the annuity provider offers

Questions people ask
How much of the corpus must buy an annuity?
The rules require at least 40% of the corpus to be used for an annuity at normal exit, leaving the rest available as a lumpsum. That share is what turns into your pension. The figures shown here follow the regulations listed in the sources below.
How is NPS taxed?
Contributions attract deductions under Section 80C and a further amount under Section 80CCD(1B), and an employer contribution has its own treatment. The lumpsum taken at exit is tax free, while the annuity income is taxed as income in the year you receive it. Confirm the current limits with the income tax tool.
What return should I assume?
NPS has no guaranteed return; it depends on the pension funds and the mix of equity and debt you choose. A balanced mix has historically landed between a deposit and a pure equity fund. Model a cautious figure and a hopeful one, and plan on the cautious one.
Can I exit before the normal age?
An early exit is allowed, but a larger share of the corpus must then go into an annuity and only a small part can be taken in cash. The rules also set a minimum period in the scheme. Check the current conditions before counting on an early exit.
