In short: Word Counter

The text in the box has 15 words and 93 characters, or 79 without the spaces, across 1 sentences and 1 paragraphs. That is about 5 seconds to read at the speed set above. The longest word in it is calculation.

What is Word?

A word count is the number of runs of characters separated by spaces, which is how every tool that counts words defines it.

How is Word calculated?

words=runs of characters between spaces

Words are counted as runs of characters separated by whitespace, sentences as runs ended by a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, and paragraphs as blocks separated by a blank line. Reading time is the word count divided by the reading speed.

Questions people ask

Does a hyphenated word count as one or two?

As one, because it has no space in it, which is how word processors count too. A word split across a line break with a hyphen will count as two, since the break is whitespace. Em dashes with spaces around them separate words.

Which character count should I use for a form?

Most forms count every character including spaces, which is the first character figure here. Some count only the visible characters, which is the second. Read the form's own wording, and use the stricter figure if it is unclear.

How is reading time worked out?

The word count divided by the reading speed set above, which defaults to a figure typical for adult reading of ordinary prose. Dense or technical text reads much slower. Treat it as a rough guide rather than a promise.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting happens in this page as you type, and nothing is stored or sent. This tool will not put your text into a shareable link either, for the same reason.
