Questions people ask
What makes a gain long term?
The holding period needed differs by asset: listed equity and equity funds need just over a year, while property and most other assets need longer. The page shows the threshold for the asset you choose. Crossing it usually means a lower rate.
What is the exemption on equity gains?
Long-term gains on listed equity and equity mutual funds are exempt up to a limit each year, with only the excess taxed. The limit applies across all such gains in the year, not per transaction. The figure used here is in the sources below.
Why does a debt fund show no tax rate?
A debt fund bought after the rule change is taxed at your slab rate rather than a special one, whatever the holding period. The tool therefore reports the gain and says it is added to your income. Use the income tax tool with that gain included.
What about indexation on property?
Indexation was withdrawn for most assets sold after July 2024, and the rate was lowered to match. A property bought before that date may still be able to use the older method if it works out lower. This tool shows the newer method, so check both with your accountant.
