In short: RD Calculator

Paying ₹5,000 a month for 60 months at 6.75% matures at ₹3,57,299.75. You deposit ₹3,00,000.00 of that yourself and ₹57,299.75 is interest. Each instalment earns for a different length of time, so the first one earns far more than the last.

What is RD?

A recurring deposit is a bank or post office account into which you pay a fixed amount every month for a fixed term, at a rate set when you open it.

How is RD calculated?

M=R×(1+i)n-11-(1+i)-13

The deposit goes in every month while the interest rests every quarter, which is where the cube root comes from. The monthly amount is multiplied by one plus the quarterly rate raised to the number of quarters, less one, and divided by one minus that same rate raised to minus a third.

  • Mthe maturity amount
  • Rthe amount deposited each month
  • ithe quarterly rate, which is the yearly rate divided by four hundred
  • nthe number of quarters in the term

Questions people ask

Why is an RD worth less than an FD of the same total?

In a recurring deposit the money arrives gradually, so most of it is invested for far less than the full term. A fixed deposit has the whole amount working from day one. For the same rate and term, the lump sum always matures higher.

What happens if I miss a monthly instalment?

Most banks charge a small penalty for each missed instalment and may close the account if several are missed in a row. The maturity amount falls too, because that money never earned. Standing instructions from a savings account are the usual way to avoid it.

Is a post office RD different from a bank RD?

The mechanics are the same, but the rate is notified by the government rather than set by a bank, and the standard term is longer. Rates and terms differ, so use the ones on your own account. The interest is taxable in both cases.

Is RD interest taxable?

Yes, it is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and tax can be deducted at source once the interest for the year crosses the threshold. There is no special exemption for a recurring deposit. The TDS tool shows the deduction on a given amount.
