In short: Discount Calculator
A price of ₹2,499 with 30% taken off comes to 1,749.30, which saves you ₹749.70. The real discount works out at 30.00%, and that is the figure to compare between shops. Once GST of ₹0.00 is added, the amount you actually pay is ₹1,749.30.
What is Discount?
A discount is an amount taken off a price, written as a percentage of the price it is taken from.
How is Discount calculated?
Each discount is taken off what is left after the one before it, not off the original price, which is why two offers of twenty and ten per cent do not make thirty. GST is then charged on the discounted price.

Questions people ask
Why is an extra ten per cent off not ten per cent of the original price?
Because the second discount applies to what is left after the first, which is a smaller number. Twenty per cent then ten per cent comes to twenty-eight per cent, not thirty. The real discount figure on this page is the one to compare.
Is GST charged before or after the discount?
After, on the discounted price, provided the discount was agreed at or before the time of the sale. That is why the order on this page is discount first, then GST. Discounts given later have their own treatment.
What does a flat sixty per cent off actually mean?
Usually that it applies to the marked price, which may itself be set well above what the item normally sells for. Compare the final price here against what the same thing costs elsewhere, rather than comparing discounts.
How do I work backwards from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by one minus the discount as a decimal to recover the original. Half off means dividing by a half, which doubles it. The percentage tool handles that direction too.
