In short: Unix Timestamp Converter
The timestamp entered reads as Wed, 15 Nov 2023, 03:43 in the zone chosen, which is 2023-11-14T22:13:20Z in universal time, and it falls on a Wednesday. Against the current moment that is 2 years ago. The same instant has a different clock time in every zone, which is the whole point of storing it as a count of seconds.
What is Unix Timestamp?
A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds since the start of 1970 in universal time, which is how most systems store a moment.
How is Unix Timestamp calculated?
A timestamp counts seconds from the start of 1970 in universal time, so converting means adding that many seconds to the start and then applying the zone's offset. Going the other way subtracts the offset first and then counts back to the start.
- tthe timestamp, in seconds
- offsetthe zone's distance from universal time on that date

Questions people ask
Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?
A timestamp of ten digits is in seconds and one of thirteen is in milliseconds, which is the quickest way to tell. JavaScript works in milliseconds while most databases and APIs use seconds. Picking the wrong one puts the date out by about fifty thousand years.
Why is the date wrong by a few hours?
Almost always because of the time zone: a timestamp is a moment in universal time, and reading it in the wrong zone shifts the clock. Choose the zone the system that produced it was using. India sits five and a half hours ahead of universal time.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store a timestamp in a signed 32-bit integer run out of room in January 2038, and older software can misbehave then. Modern systems use 64-bit timestamps and are unaffected. This tool handles dates far beyond that either way.
Can I use this for a negative timestamp?
Yes, a negative value is a moment before 1970 and converts normally. Very early dates are shown on the proleptic Gregorian calendar, the same one every modern system uses. Dates before the calendar reform are historical conveniences rather than what people alive then would have written.
