In short: Credit Card Payoff Calculator

A balance of ₹1,00,000 at 3.5% a month takes 13 months to clear if you pay ₹10,000 each month, and costs ₹25,265.30 in interest. Card rates are quoted monthly, which is why 51.11% a year is the figure that matters.

What is Credit Card Payoff?

A credit card balance is revolving debt charged interest every month on whatever is still outstanding, at a rate quoted per month rather than per year.

How is Credit Card Payoff calculated?

balance=balance+(balance×i)-payment

Each month the card adds interest on whatever is outstanding, then takes off what you paid. The tool repeats that until the balance reaches zero, counting the months and adding up the interest. If your payment is smaller than the interest, the balance never falls and the tool says so.

  • balancewhat is outstanding at the start of the month
  • ithe monthly rate, as a decimal
  • paymentwhat you pay that month

How to use this credit card payoff calculator

  1. Enter the outstanding balance from your latest statement.
  2. Enter the monthly rate the statement quotes, not a yearly one.
  3. Enter what you actually pay each month.
  4. Read the months to clear, then try paying a little more.

Questions people ask

Why is the yearly rate so much higher than the monthly one?

Because the interest compounds every month, so each month's interest earns interest in the months that follow. A rate that looks modest per month works out far higher across a year. The yearly figure shown here is what that monthly rate actually costs.

What happens if I only pay the minimum?

The minimum is often set near the interest charge itself, so the balance barely moves and the debt can run for years. Enter the minimum here and the tool will either show a very long payoff or tell you the balance never clears. Paying anything above the interest is what starts reducing it.

Should I convert the balance to an EMI plan?

A card issuer's EMI conversion usually charges less than the revolving rate, so it often costs less than carrying the balance. Watch for the processing fee and whether GST is charged on the interest. Compare the total payable, not the monthly figure.

Is a personal loan cheaper than a card balance?

Almost always, because unsecured loan rates sit well below revolving card rates. Moving the balance means a fixed instalment and a known end date. The personal loan tool shows what the same amount would cost that way.
