What is Inflation?

Inflation is the rate at which prices rise, which means the same amount of money buys a little less each year.

How is Inflation calculated?

FV=P×(1+r)t

Multiply the amount by one plus the inflation rate, raised to the number of years, to get the future price. Divide instead of multiplying to see what today's money will be worth in future terms.

  • FVthe amount you will need in future
  • Pthe amount today
  • rthe yearly rate of inflation, as a decimal
  • tthe number of years ahead

Questions people ask

What inflation rate should I use?

The published consumer price figure is a national average across a basket of goods, and your own costs may rise faster, especially for school fees and medical care. Many people plan long-term goals on a rate above the headline figure. Try two rates and see how much the answer moves.

Why does inflation matter so much for retirement?

Because the period is long and the effect compounds, so a modest rate roughly doubles costs over a couple of decades. A retirement plan built on today's expenses will fall well short. The retirement tool applies inflation to your expenses before working out the corpus.

Does a fixed deposit beat inflation?

Only when the rate after tax is above the rate of inflation, which is often a close call. Work out the post-tax return and compare it with the inflation rate you expect. If the gap is negative, the deposit is losing buying power even while the balance grows.

Is this the same as the cost inflation index?

No. The cost inflation index is a specific series notified for indexing capital gains, and it applies only to certain assets and years. This tool uses a plain compounding rate you choose. For tax, use the figures the Income Tax Department publishes.
