In short: Goal SIP Calculator
To reach ₹50,00,000 in 15 years at 12% a year you need to invest about ₹9,909.31 every month. Of the final amount, ₹17,83,675.80 is your own money and ₹32,16,324.20 is return. Give yourself more years and the monthly figure falls steeply, because the return does more of the work.
What is Goal SIP?
A goal SIP is the monthly investment worked backwards from a target amount and the number of years available to reach it.
How is Goal SIP calculated?
Take the amount you need, multiply it by the monthly return, and divide by one plus the monthly return raised to the number of instalments, less one, times one plus the monthly return again. It is the SIP rule read backwards.
- Pthe monthly instalment you need to invest
- FVthe amount you want at the end
- ithe expected return for one month, as a decimal
- nthe number of monthly instalments

Questions people ask
Should the target be in today's money or future money?
If you enter today's price of the thing you are saving for, the answer will fall short, because prices rise. Either raise the target for inflation first, or use a return net of inflation. The inflation tool turns today's figure into the one you will actually face.
What if the monthly amount is more than I can manage?
You have three levers: a longer timeframe, a lower target, or a step-up plan that starts smaller and grows. Lengthening the timeframe usually helps most, because the return compounds for longer. The step-up tool shows what a rising instalment does.
Why does the answer change so much with the return?
Over a long period the return is applied again and again, so a small change in it changes the final amount a great deal. That cuts both ways, which is why planning on an optimistic return is risky. Try a rate two or three points lower and see whether the plan still holds.
Does this allow for tax on the gain?
No. The amount shown is before capital gains tax, which falls due when you redeem. If the goal needs a precise sum in hand, raise the target to cover the tax. The capital gains tool can work out roughly how much that is.
