In short: Vehicle RTO Lookup

Type the start of a number plate above and Vehicle RTO Lookup returns the transport office, its city or district, and the state. It tells you where a vehicle was registered, which is useful when buying a used car or working out where a vehicle comes from.

What is Vehicle RTO?

The code at the start of an Indian number plate identifies the state and the regional transport office where the vehicle was registered.

How is Vehicle RTO calculated?

plate=state+office+series+number

Two letters give the state, the digits after them give the registering office within that state, and the rest is a series and a number unique to the vehicle. Only the first part is needed to identify the office.

  • statetwo letters for the state or union territory
  • officethe digits identifying the transport office in that state
  • seriesthe letters and number unique to the vehicle

How to use this vehicle RTO lookup

  1. Type the first part of the plate, the letters and the digits that follow.
  2. The shape is checked here before anything is sent.
  3. Read the office, the city or district, and the state.
  4. Use the address if you need to visit that office.

Questions people ask

What does this tell me about the vehicle?

Only where it was registered, which is the office that issued the plate. It does not return the owner, the model or the insurance status, and this tool makes no attempt to. Those details are personal and sit behind the government's own authenticated services.

Why does it matter when buying a used car?

Because a vehicle registered in another state needs a no-objection certificate and re-registration if you move it permanently, which takes time and money. Knowing the registering office tells you whether that applies. Road tax already paid in another state is also a common surprise.

What about the newer series plates?

Some newer registration series are issued centrally rather than by a single office, so a code may map to a scheme rather than to a building. Where that is so, the lookup says as much. The state is still identifiable from the first two letters.

What is sent when I look up a code?

Only the code you typed, which is the office part of a plate and not a full registration number. Nothing is stored and there is no account. Every other tool on this site works without the internet.
